I know that the first is to calculate the length of the sides of a right angled triangle. But I've lost the reason for the 2nd equation.

it's the binomial formula with n=2.

the right hand side is simply the expansion of the left hand side. as following:

(a + b)^2 = a^2 + 2ab + b^2
(a + b)^3 = a^3 + 3a^2b + 3ab^2 + b^3

and so on...

if you take the coefficients of the right hand side (the numbers in front of each a, ab, b term) you get Pascal's triangle

1 4 6 4 1

and so forth. basically it's a very useful expansion series because the left hand side and the corresponding coefficients crop up up all the time in different aspects of mathematics most notably in probability and statistics and large polynomials in general.

I have maths test thursday... Good thing that I have only two courses left after this one. But then I have the final exam, which I am not very excited about. :( I used to be really good at maths but when I went to high school that changed.
