Well computers can still run when the power isn't going out for longer then ~1.3 seconds.
Your modem doesn't like stuff like that though, so it's likely that it would screw up things, so that could explain the skype only thing.

Well, amongst my Christmas gifts, I did manage to find some activity books that teaches grammar and the like, for both German and Italian Looks like this coming year I might actually be able to fulfil my New Year's Resolution a bit better

No, I tend to be gone the day before, and celebrate. As a consequence I can invite anyone I know, but it won't make sense to go to an empty house.
