<<Welcome Metal 808! I hope to party with you there! This i s my first Wacken too but I'm putting together group tours thru my travel company starting next year to make it easier (and hopefully cheaper) for us metalfiend North Americans to go from now on.
]If your not into camping I think your best bet is to try the Itzhoe Hostel. I don't think they are taking reservations so showing up early could score you a cheap bed if your lucky.

Greetings LXE (and all North American and other metal fiends)! Thanks for the post. My German friend who I will attend Wacken with me has made lodging arangements for us in Itzehoe, so everything is set. Look for me, at Wacken, I'll most likely be the only one wearing a hat that says Hawaii on it!
