OH! I thought people usually take the ferry as a way of transportation, rather than something to just get drunk on! hehe..cause right now I'm thinking about going to Finland and from there on conducting the rest of my trip..however I'm still planning cause I'm a bit lost

Some actually do take the ferry for transportation, but others only to get drunk and buy "cheap" alcohol.

It's not really "tax free", or, well, the ones selling don't need to pay taxes, but they do charge a shitload for the stuff considering the taxes are off...

But Scandinavia is known to be very expensive. Especially when alcohol is concerned. The only one who can sell alcohol in those countries is the State itself. NO ONE else!

And when it's tax free.....

Need I say more?

True, Scandinavia is horribly expensive when purchasing alcohol to take home.
Norway is insane, Sweden comes a bit behind but still expensive as fuck compared to e.g. Germany.

Regarding selling alcohol and the state, that's true when you as a private person wants to purchase alcohol to take to your home.

We still have bars and such, these has nothing to do with the state ;)

Actually when purchasing drinks in bars and so ón in Sweden it's not that horribly expensive when comparing to several other European cities.

In some aspects we're cheaper than Paris and London for example.
And Switzerland, well, do we need to go there? :D

Example:

To purchase the most "popular" beer in Sweden to take home (the ones leading the number if purchases per year) it will cost about €1 for a 50 cl can.
That includes a 5 cent deposit for the can.
Out of that price about 42 cents is alcohol taxes.

There are cheaper beers to purhcase.
They are about as good as a Holsten or a Hasseröder, i.e. cheap disgusting swill that will get you drunk.

To purchase some great beer, say a Rochefort 10, 33 cl bottle, you'll pay about €3.75, no deposit.
Taxes are about 62 cents.

A Blue Chimay is abour €2.90 per 33 cl bottle, no deposit.
Taxes about 50 cents of the price.

Oh yeah, the shops are called "Systembolaget"
http://www.systembolaget.se/Applikationer/Knappar/InEnglish/
look for the yellow and green sign.

You need to be 20 years of age to shop and you will have to be able to present a valid form of identification stating date of birth and with a photo.

I think I'm tired and should go to bed :p

When you're in Helsinki i can really recommend the "eurohostel" for staying the night there, it is very cheap and you can cook there by yourself so that you don't need to buy that very expensive food. ok, if you decide to buy food in their restaurant it's quite cheap anyway.. and they have really good breakfast buffet.

or check out for hostels here: http://www.hostelbookers.com/booking/form.cfm?x_msg=noParams

I've been in Helsinki lot's of time, and there are a few really good bars, where you also meet "popular" people like the guys from the band Norther, Wintersun, Stratovarius, Children of Bodom, Imperanon...

These are the "Inferno" and the "Courner Bar" in the Store-Complex "Kampii" is also a good bar called "Rotterdamm" The Inferno is quite expensive, but it's worth it :) Sometimes you've to wait a bit till you can go in - but that is that way in the most "in" bars in Helsinki. And it costs about 4,- to get in and 2,- to leave your jacket. Courner bar is a bit less expensive. Maybe there is something going on in the Tavastia club, too.

When you are in Helsinki you should really check out the "stature of Satan"
It's so funny, at the Vinha kirk-kopuisto there is a stature of some university former or something like that - but if you look the left side from upside down you'll see Satain rising from Hell *ggg* with Pentagraphs and all *gg* very very funny *gg*

Hmm.. visiting Soumenlinna, a small ireland, is very recommendable, too, because it's a very very nice nature place. And all these Parks round the Border of Helsinki. Especially the Sibillius-park with the legendays "sibillius-fuckin' Momoment" (Children of bodom - thrashed & lost in Helsinki).

And there are a few very good Metalstores in Helsinki. I personally like the "hellsinki Rock store" very much. It's in the Albertinkatu near Kampii.

If you like i can send you a card with the best places marked. i mean - i've a metal boyfriend in that city.... :)

Me and my mates were planning on touring Norway before Wacken, by doing the Norway in a Nutshell. We can't seem to decide on what the best method of travel would be from Norway to Wacken. Everything we check into seems way to expensive!

Thanks so much for all the valuable information. I'll take all of this into consideration, the only hard part about the trip is that I'm going to be alone, so all the information you have provided has been really valuable. And if you could send the card, I would be truly grateful.

Forums have been working slow for me, so sorry for the late response. I haven't bought my plane tickets yet, I am still planning the exact dates. So how many days will you be in helsinki?
