Have you ever heard of the Hard Rock band Blackfoot? Not Metal, but damned good, no keys no brass etc., but they have written some epics, check out Diary of a Working Man, total brilliance. Another in the same category, Lynryd Skynryd "Free Bird" very much epic. And not a bag pipe, horn or any type of wind instrument in site.

The thing is, even as a metalhead, it's good to like a variety of music, even within the Metal/Hard Rock category. It keeps it more interesting and keeps one from becoming burnt out with just one sub-genre.

I'll give it a listen... but yea, there's definitely some epic stuff out there that don't involve multiple instruments. Ballads from Scorpions and Annihilator for example. Free Bird's nice, though I wouldn't quite go as far as epic. :o
