I never really got into Bathory though. I would say that is some ways Hellhammer and Celtic Frost had an influence on Black metal.

yes they are, and as far as black metal is concerned, there was Venom back then, then a little later, Bathory. But venom sounds quite different than the Black metal we know now.

the newer black metal bands seem different than the older Norwegian black metal bands... like generally I don't like the old Norwegian bands besides Immortal, but newer black metal like Kampfar, Sear Bliss, Vreid, and Bergthron [discovered them recently, good stuff] is a lot more melodic... which I like

Yeah I like the newer ones as well and the newer stuff by the old bands, like Dimmu Borgir for example. The real early stuff was so badly produced and recorded that it's hard to listen to, IMO.

well that's true, but I also think Norwegian BM had a lot more influence from death metal than today's BM
