Who said elitists can't take a joke? I'm still laughing at the idea of 70,000 metal heads going to a metal festival which booked Avenged Sevenfold. Ho ho ho.

Metalcore is half metal, that's a classic!

Pop-punk is half punk, should all the old punks throw away their Discharge albums and go out and buy blink 182 albums?

It's a stupid statement to make, and I hope it was sarcastic.

I agree with that general sentiment. Music is either metal or not. There are no degrees of metal, and there is no halfway.

Metalcore and deathcore are empty genres to me. Both are essentially commercially approved appropriations of metal. They steal the aesthetic, but fail to render the spirit of metal. At best these genres offer insipid, self-celebrating scenes - populated by people who haven't a clue about the origins of what is being pitifully mimicked.

To the casual metal fan, distinctions between deathcore and death metal might be undiscernable. A trained ear or eye, however, can spot music which satisfies the rules of a trend.

music is a business(for the media) you cant avoid commercialization of metal, because metal is beeing VERY! explored nowadays..

you know what? piracy is the main reason of all of this, its killing our passion!, like a parasite.

nobody can do anything against it! just accept the reality!

My qualification of metalcore and deathcore is not based on record sales. Perhaps my phrasing was unclear, let me elaborate. Those genres are an echo of nu-metal. I do not mean that they are related sonically to nu-metal; I mean that metalcore has proliferated precisely because it is easy fodder for teens. As with nu-metal, the fans have little idea about the precursors of the music that they like, and the bands are swill merchants. The sales reflect the easy herding of unscrupulous fans.

Iron Maiden is different, because they produced a body of work which is well respected within the metal world. The fact that they are so popular nowadays is probably related to two things: they have been going a long time and have built up a tremendous fan base; because they are an institution they have become very accessible to the previous casual fans I was discussing. Think of it in the same way as Metallica: we've all met people who would swear blind that Master Of Puppets is the greatest thrash album of all time, yet they've never even heard of Death Angel, Sodom or Coroner.

I believe that some bands who are successful commercially are still respectable, but like Maiden, they surely have some undue popularity, or popularity which is questionable when you consider how unknown certain peers are. Regardless, metalcore and deathcore are merely trends, and when recognised as such, the big names of the genres have changed their skin, to avoid the stigma. Just look at Trivium and Job For A Cowboy. Did they like 'real metal' all along, or did they see their careers disappearing as fast as those of all the nu-metal bands which did not change their sound like Slipknot did (think Limp Bizkit).

The commercialisation of metal has been studiously avoided by the underground bands. The surface of metal is well explored, but that is all. I know plenty of the sort who attend Download festival here in England, who would not have a clue of much of the lineup of many European festivals. People who call themselves metalheads but still think that Chaos AD is Sepultura's first album.

you know what? piracy is the main reason of all of this, its killing our passion!, like a parasite.

I'm not so sure about this. Piracy could theoretically hurt the underground, but the net result is debatable - the exposure undoubtedly helps too. Otherwise, I don't see what piracy has got to do with metalcore bands (or worse) being booked at a metal festival.

I agree that people should support their favourite bands, though. Like you, much of my spare money goes to CDs and gigs.

Don't take this personally. I described a casual metalhead as someone who couldn't tell the difference between death metal and deathcore. I presume that you can easily tell the difference. You're not going to confuse Suicide Silence with Suffocation, I expect.

i think it does, because thats a sign of commercialization, i think many bands dont play metalcore because they like it, they may just play it to servive in the music world and being posers at the same time, because because they dont feel the music they play!. But if they do, i think they ´re are not!.

and as i allready said, i dont care about metalcore, i just think that we should respect everybody who enjoy it and i think also that all the people that really enjoy metalcore arent posers, IF they really like it. If they pretend to like it or to play it, just because of the money, they are indeed posers!.
among all the people that go to download this year of course there are "true" metal heads among them. try to see commercial metal has a filter to people find the "real" metal!. This is the only good about it.

I agree that people should support their favourite bands, though. Like you, much of my spare money goes to CDs and gigs.

yeah, and since the metal scene in portugal isnt very good(in my opinion) i prefer to go abroad. Most of festivals are mainstream, so i avoid them..
and there is many bands that we wont see them here. we only have 3 decent festivals, pure underground, no mainstream.

the difference is Suicide Silence isnt pure metal and the second one is :p:p
Suffocation is very nice Technical Death Metal ;)

"Sorry folks, no Kalmah this year....but we have Avenged Sevenfold"

What pisses me off the most is that this shitty band just took a spot away from someone good!

"Sorry folks, no Kalmah this year....but we have Avenged Sevenfold"

Unbelievable!

sorry... please tell me that Wacken organizers didnt ACTUALLY say that there was going to be no Kalmah?? Did they actually say "no kalmah" or were you just saying this to make a point?? (please tell me you meant the latter!!)

I NEED to see Kalmah... as im sure do a lot of you guys!!
