Q: Just for clarity the Metal Train stop in Cologne is Köln Deutz/Messe. It's across the bridge from the haupbanhoff - about 20 minutes walk from one to the other. I only know this because that is where we are getting OFF and the schedule they sent me specifically says (Achtung! Nicht Köln Hbf!!!)

From Köln Hbf (Cologne Main) you can take ANY S-Bahn to Deutz/Messe! It's just the next station! (From Köln Hbf, track 10), or any regional train (RE/RB) going in the direction of Düsseldorf (Flughafen/Hbf)

Curious, on the first pages there are some shots at Remedy Records and the shuttles. Are they a bad option for getting to Wacken? We are staying in Hamburg the 2 days before the fest so its an option.

Is there anything inherently wrong with the shuttles? 2014 will be the first time I attend WOA and I was planning to take the shuttle right from Hamburg Airport right after my landing (seemed to be the most convenient way).

I've never taken the shuttle bus from Hamburg to Wacken, but I did take the shuttle from Nuremberg airport to Summer Breeze last year. If they are alike (which I imagine they are), there'll be plenty of room for your bags and therefore a comfortable bus ride. It'd definitely be much more comfortable and less stressful than getting off the plane then straight onto regular public transport to the festival site. Signs are clearly marked at the airport so you won't miss them. I would recommend allowing a decent amount of time between your estimated landing time and leaving on the shuttle so you don't miss it.

Personally, I much prefer (and always have done) to stay overnight in the city from where I'm catching public transport to the festival site, whichever way I decide to get there. Decent sleep, a decent feed and less panic when it comes time to leave is an overall winner for me.

Me too, and also stay the night before you fly out just in case! The beauty of having the room before and after is that you can arrive in Wacken fully rested and fed (don't underestimate this!) and also you can get at least one night to sleep and shower after Wacken (also super important) before you get on a plane.

Sounds good. Thank you very much. :)

Plane to Hamburg, rent-a-car from Hamburg to a little village a couple miles away from Wacken where I rent a house, to Wacken by car on all days, after WOA by car to Munich for a couple weeks and back to the US.
