Best, Nederland. Jetzt Belgien

It was on my newspaper as well this mornng.

Finaly they came to their senses. What would Hoegaarden be without Hoegaarden? You can't call it Jupiler, as Jupiler is a "pils" here, and Hoegaarden brewed in Jupille has never been a good idea.

One of the main problems is the fact that the water in Jupille is different than in Hoegaarden. And we all know how important water is for beer!

LEVE HOEGAARDEN!!!
VIVE LA HOEGAARDEN!!!
ES LEBE HOEGAARDEN!!!

2 Fat Weasel Pale Ales, from the bottle into my heineken mug.

Eh...this doesn't seem like a pale ale very much at all to me. It is not bitter in the least, no bite, and it's a bit fruity.

What makes a pale ale a pale ale? Let's say, American pale ale, in this case.

Pale ales can be:
English ordinary bitter
English (best) special bitter
English pale ale
California common/steam beer
English light mild
Kölsch
English strong (extra special) bitter
India Pale Ale
American Pale Ale
English old/strong ale
Belgian pale ale

As you can see "pale ale" is a very wide definition, you need to go more into specific sub styles to get a narrower definition.
But not even then is it very obvious what a beer should be like, you can only set the boundaries and then decide whether a beer fits into that style or not.

An American Pale Ala (APA) is usually fruity, unmistakable (heavy) scent and taste of specifically American hop varieties.
Medium body, golden to copper color, 4.4 to 5.9% ABV, not very bitter but you can sense it for sure.

The style APA is fairly new, it can not count as a "classic" beer style just yet.
It didn't exist before 1979 at least.

Maybe so, but that one is easy to get over here ;)

You might be surprised at what lengths the likes of me go to get our hands on beers that we know beforehand will suck, just so that we'll be able to taste it.
A few weeks ago I sent 5 bottles of an alcohol free beer from Iran to a guy in Finland, the postage was ridiculously (how the hell that's seplled...) expensive, but he promised me good beer sin return :D

If you have some time to kill and you want to learn about beer styles, check this out:
http://www.beertown.org/education/pdf/BA_Beer_Style_2007.pdf

It's not the one I use, but I guess you'll be able to understand that one better than my Swedish one ;)

*head explodes*

The IBU's - is that rated on a scale of 0-100?

I think in order to understand that form I need to learn what hops are/taste like, what maltiness is, etc. I have much to learn in the ways of the brew..

Yes.

But the actual perceived bitternedss of an IBU is also very much dependant of which beer it is.

How sweet is it, how strong is it, how much other taste has it got?

I've tasted IBU 100 beers that is awful, bitter as hell, like likcing a carpet.
And I've tasted IBU 100 beers that are excellent, big strong porter stuff that moves the hair from the carpet to your chest!
:D

Anyway, it all takes tringing of course :)

My recommendation is that when you do get to drink beer and if you have a choice, try to find as many different styles and labels as possible, compare them t each other, write down your remarks to put words on your sensations and most of all:
Even though it's fun to drink to get drunk, save those occasions to a lucky few and most of the times you drink beer, drink to sample or because it taste good :)
