So I teached him rightly. The problem was with "apen"... he pronounced the "a" as in english first

If you've used the "German" A, then you're correct. But it is not "neuk" like in "Neu" in German.
(Neuk ist nicht ausgesprochen wie das Deutsche "Neu", z.B.)
