Wacken Open Air 2009 was held from Wednesday, July 29 to Saturday, August 1, and marked the festival's 20th year.
Running Wild's set on Thursday was their last before they split up. The performance was recorded for a pending CD/DVD release.
Kampfar were originally scheduled to perform on the Party Stage on Saturday, but were forced to cancel their appearance due to personal reasons. Their slot was filled by Onkel Tom.

Wacken Open Air 2010 will be held from Thursday, August 5 to Saturday, August 7. The festival will be headlined by Iron Maiden, Alice Cooper, Mötley Crüe, and Slayer.
Several bands will be playing special sets at the festival. Corvus Corax will be playing a show entitled "Wacken Burns" to close out the main stage performances on Friday. To celebrate their 30th anniversary, Grave Digger will be performing their 1996 album, Tunes of War, in its entirety. Likewise, Tiamat will perform their entire 1994 album, Wildhoney, in honor of both their 20th year together and the 15th birthday of the album.

A YouTube user who calls himself MrMeddled has posted an outrageously amazing surf rock version of Emperor's black metal song 'I am the Black Wizard.' Almost as entertaining as the interpretation/transformation is the accompanying text, which reads in part:

"In 1959, Chip Ihsahn and Rocky Samoth met on the beach in California. They shared a love of crude reverb units, surfing, smoking illicit substances and driving cars with fake wood on the sides. They soon formed a surf band [that] evolved into the now well-known The Thou Shalt Suffers. Soon, however, Rocky Samoth began to write surf music music outside of The Thou Shalt Suffers, and together with Chip Ihsahn and a new bass player called Woody Mortiis (later of his own eponymous band The Mortiises), The Emperors was formed."
