Just a simple question.

In equal situation, both as intellectual, as talented.
But A lives in a poor family and B lives in a 'rich' family. (don't esaggerate the rich here!!!)

Both want to go to University. Now.... who's got the most chance to get a (sorry for an incorrect word) scolarship?

And who's SUPPOSED to get in?

It shows the difference between US and EU though. And there's nothing wrong with that! :)

For a scholorship? Both are equally capable of getting it. Unless, one of the people is a minority, then that person will have the better chance.

Basically it works like, if you're

-above a certain percentile in grades/test scores
-exceptionally talented in sports/music/etc
-poor
-minority

You can get government aid/scholarships.

If not, you're out of luck.

Both were equal in personal view. So if one is in a minority is unknown. (excpet the wealth factor)

But you made my point in a way.

I can only talk for NL, I'm still figuring the Belgian system, won't work :D

In NL you get a basic scolarship (some 100s €uros/month, don't know the exact amount!!!)
And above you have to loan (from the government at normal bank rates, or maybe just below).
But that depends on the income of the parents. (or it used to be)

The Dutch government has a nasty habbit to change it every x years. Since I've been living in BE for 6yrs....
