I've been to two American festivals. I can confirm that they suck. They suck even compared to normal shows.

Paying $40-$80 for a ticket to a "metalfest" shouldn't make one sit through 60 bad bands to see a handful of good ones. They always throw in like 80% hardcore/metalcore/nu-metal into it with 20% decent bands who get screwed out of a full set because the headliner is somebody like White Chapel and they just grab up all the bands that are touring, making those of us who want to see the shows with a full set spend the money to go to NYC.

The other one I went to was Chicago Powerfest. It was ok, I liked the venue and food and three of the bands. I didn't know the other bands so I gave them a chance and found myself wasting my time. But, I wouldn't call it a festival, it was three consecutive shows done by the same dudes.

I suppose if you go to one like TNT festival or ProgPower it might be better. Just, don't go to New England Metal festival.

Not to mention, it's not an open air, it's just a venue show. Except for TNT that is.

Yea I've heard Progpower's good. Also I liked Scion fest when it was here last year, it even had an outdoor stage.
