btw, what is it with metalheads having a Nietzsche fetish? I usually find philosophy a dry and boring topic (probably due in part to the fact that my attention span is narrower than an Antarctica phone book)...but considering how often I see postings on metal boards about Nietzsche, there must be something there I'm missing.

Well Warthog... it might be because Nietzsche's way of thinking was rather extreme, radical, mysanthropic, he was an atheist, and wanted to be more in contact with nature... (all these themes are really common in metal lyrics). When I was younger read all I could find about him....

Rosk:Be extreme and radical is good and it is the only way to enforce, but then there are people who totally agree with you or people who think you are total idiot...but one thing they have in common. It will influence both sides :)

Mainly because Nietzsche was totally against the Status Quo, and most of all, he was a true atheist and wrote quite a lot against religion, a subject that a good percentage of people who are into metal totally despises.

Do you like to read books? If you dont, its no surprise that philosophy turns out to be very, very boring. The best way for newcomers is to get those books that sums up all about the philosopher's life and his books. Those type of book are way easier to read than the philosopher's original book.

I've once read "How to Philosophize With a Hammer" and I gotta say that it was a little bit way too dense for me. I'm pretty sure that most people who talk about Nietzsche know shit about him and just do it based on short biographies that they've once found in the internet...

@Evenfiel: The ironic thing is that I actually DO like to read (hell, I worked in a bookstore for two years, go figure). Mostly fiction, sci-fi (fun stuff), but I read a lot of history, and other such nonfiction...and even the driest and denest histories, science books, law books, computer books, etc. didn't faze me. For some reason, philosophy was something I could never get into. Maybe now that I'm older, I'll try again.

I did try reading "Beyond Good & Evil" (I think) once, because I wanted to avoid being one of those people you mention - who just read shorts bio's and then claim to be experts on Nietzsche. I think I got maybe five pages into that book, lol. And then I picked up Carl Sagan's "Candle in the Dark" (one of the most brilliant anti-religious, anti-new-age-bullshit books I've found) and finished it in three days...go figure.

Anyhow, I think I'll try your idea - picking up one of those books which summarizes his life and ideas. Maybe it'll put things in perspective and make his actual books a bit easier to read. I don't want to claim I know anything about Nietzsche (whether I agree or disagree) until I actually know somehting about him.

Thanks for the tip!
