Certainly it is a process of getting used to.

But my problem is: I would never - NEVER - have become a fan of the band without Matt Barlow. He always had a very impressive voice and "aura", different from any other metal singer I know.

The songs themselves, i.e. the work of Jon Schaffer, are great, too. In most cases. That's why I still like the new material. But Matt's voice gave me the most recognizeable part of the music. (Next to it comes Jon's distinctive kind of riffing and so on, of course.)

And to the question which albums are best: I've got almost all of them (except The Dark Saga and the Melancholy EP). Burnt Offerings is not the best one imho. Though there are some really good songs on it. I really dig the Something Wicked album - great music, great singer - some all-time favourites on it like Watching Over Me, Melancholy, I Stand Alone, Blessed Are You, and the Something Wicked Trilogy.
But the album which is most important for ME and which evokes the most memories is Horror Show. You can think about this album what you want. You don't have to like it. But for ME, this one was the first metal album I ever liked. The first one I bought. Something very special to me. I guess without Horror Show I wouldn't write this post now.

Hear, hear!

Dark Saga was the album that first got me in to Iced Earth, and is still my favorite...first song I ever heard was "The Hunter" off a tape that an old penpal sent me, and...whoa! What a killer!

Burnt Offerings does kinda slog for me too...Dante's Inferno is cool, but I just don't have that kind of patience. :D I hate the vocals on the first one (as everyone else does, I guess), and Night of the Stormrider is cool even (the singer was decent but generic...sounds like he could've sang for one of those no-name '80s Metal Blade bands that did one LP and dropped out of sight). Barlow's voice is indeed something else - he sings with a devastatingly powerful low/midrange when everyone else in "true" metal was trying to hit these piercing highs.

Oh well, I'll always support Iced Earth because they were the American metal band that developed an original sound, and then soldiered through the years when no one on these shores seemed to give a shit about metal. And that's no small feat.

That's a part of what I meant, yeah. He's simply impressive. I know no other singer with that much emotion in his voice. And he simply could sing anything from the softest ballad type of song to the most aggressive, almost thrash-like stuff.

...true, though not as important for me as a German, of course

hehe...Of course, because metal never died out over there like it did here...you're luckier than you know. :D

Fuck, Iced Earth didn't even do a full US tour until just before Something Wicked came out...and they'd already done a few tours of Europe by then I think.

Don't know. That was looong before I came to metal (as I said, Horror Show was my first metal CD...and Iced Earth was the first metal concert I went to :) impressive, again).
But it's not too bad living in Germany if you're into metal, that's true.
