Oh yeah, gay people tend to be attracted to beautiful places, I think. And San Francisco...while it's gotten a little grimy in recent years...is one of the most beautiful cities the US has to offer.

Not to mention it having a great rep for having a good metal scene and a goth scene I've recently discovered.

Goth scene DEFINITELY, saw plenty of that when I was last there...I'm not sure about metal scene though, I don't think it's had much since the '80s. Most of the old thrash standbys are still in the area (Death Angel, Heathen, Exodus, etc.), but I think that's about it.
