Well that was quite boring thunderstorm actually. The best one I've experienced was when we were at Germany. It was crazy!

Camping of course. Like agresionpower said, it's part of the fun.
Me and my friend are gonna take a tent from Finland to Germany. Of course the trip is a bit longer for you so I understand why you wouldn't want to carry it with you.
Or we bring you one from here (40km from Wacken and going to get a ride there).

About 90% of the fun is the campground!
Thought, you have to prepare for horrible sleeps and stuff like that.
Bring earplugs!
The ground in Wacken for me has always been super comfortable to sleep on. Don't expect to sleep past 8am though (unless it's raining).
