Usually nobody will ask you for it.
But it's possible that the security guys ask you for your age, and then it's useful to have this piece of paper with you to get your 16 year old friend in. Just might save you a lot of trouble.

He doesn't need it anyway if he's leaving the festival area at midnight. But nobody is going to ask him once he's in the festival area...I mean...80k people...how should they find those under 18...
