Sometimes Metal Travel busses (the direct ones from Hamburg airport) have free seats even if you haven´t booked and payed for it. When I used that service 2012 there were few people who just came there and could get a seat but some had to wait for next bus etc.
Can always go and ask and if that doeesn´t work you can always go to Itzehoe or use some other way to get to Wacken (car, taxi...).

Do you know if the train from Hamburg to Itzehoe *may* be "sold out" on the Wednesday? Should I buy my train ticket before I get there?

The intercity might. But the nord ost see bahn is just a regular local train without reservations, you should be fine.

IC is more expensive so I never use those. Might be more confortable but metalheads don´t need that.

IC doesn't run from Altona, but from the Main Station (Hbf).
You will need to buy a ticket from either the ticket booth, or the machine. Both should do fine in English. The,machine might even have French as an option!
Edit Piaf zegt : you can get a ticket for Itzehoe at the S-Bahn Station in the airport in Hamburg! Includes the complete ride!

I managed to buy a train ticket from a machine when I came here for the second time. I couldn´t choose english on that machine but I could quess what to to do.

Thats probably a hamburg regional machine. The deutsche bahn machines should always have english as far as i know.

Bought it from Neumünster.
And here = Germany
If im not mistaken the AKN bahn is part of the hvv, which means there would be regional hamburg machines in neumuster.

thanks for all the replies and information... i will arrive on the 1st of august early morning in hamburg.... do the metal travel buses still go to wacken by then? just incase i can hop on if there are any free seats
