Kids being killed walking to school? Basically never. Maybe once in a million/billion is my guess (in this part of the country, anyway).

At that age my kids were allowed to go anywhere in this area of Helsinki as long as I knew where they were and that is just normal (actually I was bit more strict than lot of other parents). Bit different here than there

Yep. People here are paranoid - they seem to think that just because something bad can happen, it should be avoided regardless of the actual risk. I knew someone whose mom refused to let her ride the school bus just because she heard on the news that a school bus driver crashed because he fell asleep or something.

Probably both. My area's pretty safe - but deep in the cities, that's not always the case, so it's understandable to take precautions.

Yes, they are. when I was younger, I was lazy too.

In the US, they have school bus stops for the neighborhoods directly next to the school... Right across the street from it too. Never understood that.

Yeah, cause sports is unhealthy!

Children can't walk to school. They might get killed by madmen in broad daylight with tons of cops around.

I've always had rules and boundaries for my kids but I also think kids should learn things slowly and best way is to let them do bit more things by themselves all the time. If I would keep them home until they are 18 they wouldn't have a clue how things are for real and it would more likely get in trouble.
