It exists, my parents got one, but it somehow never got popular.

I wish it wasn't. I don't intend on ever signing one of those contracts. But because of them, the prepaid options are more expensive than necessary plus some newer phones aren't compatible with even the major ones. But I think they're growing in popularity, so maybe by the time I'm off my parents' plan I'll have some good options.

I think, out of everything I do on a regular basis, the one thing that makes me hate people the most is operating a vehicle.

Coming from someone who works retail on top of being on the internet, that's saying something.

(Although if I worked the returns department instead of electronics, that might change my mind.)

We sign a two-year contract with a cell phone company basically agreeing to stay with that company in exchange for subsidized phone prices. For example, most top smartphones (including the S4) start at about $200. Some you can even get for free.

I had such a contract ages ago. (still in NL)
But somehow the EU got wind of it, and I now don't know if it is still allowed or at this time forbidden. Because you're basically obliged to buy 2 things together.

actually most people I know have a contract.
I was pretty much the last person with a prepaid phone in my netwerk (contact netwerk, not the network of my mobile phone provider :p )
