Yay another history lesson 
The basics of European settlement:
A small bunch of explorers stumble across the west coast. They took one look and said to themselves "this is fucking shit" and left.
Some English dude stumbled across the east coast. He took one look and said to himself "this is fucking shit, let's send our shit people here"
They set sail, sort of get lost and take 8 fucking months to get here.
Then suddently -
"Oh shit, people live here!!!!! Um..."
...and so the story continues
