A research learned that the best period to ask for your vacation is February, March. It's just after the hollidays (x-mas, new year) and way before the summer. In these months bosses are more likely to give you your summer hollday than e.g. in May, June, which is close to the summer.

I've been working without any "official" vacation for almost 3 years now.... but the Wacken days are sort of "sacred" - all I have to do, is inform my colleagues, that I'm away for a couple days without any mail contact possible.
Worked for me for the past two years alright.
