So...
"fed" by the extreme right winged party "Vlaams Blok" (Flemish bloc), later "Vlaams Belang" (Flemish Interests) people started to believe they were better without the French speaking part. Problem in between time is.....
Brussels, exclaved in Flanders (Flemish Brabant) is 80 - 90% FRENCH speaking! And "we" wouldn't be good Belgians if we hadn't Brussels. Besides the COMPLETE NATO, EU etc. is based over there. Interesting enough I'd say.

Nowadays Flemish want a big state reform, in order to gain more competence into their "State government" rather than in Federal government. The Wallonians don't. They just want Belgium to remain as it is today.

In between time, Flanders is economically exploring and doing well, as Wallonian economy is "hanging" and deteriating (but this point is open for debate!) Therefore Flemish people (via taxes) have to "pay" the "lazy" Wallonians, and they don't want to. Besides, (as is Flemish statement) Wallonian people do not speak a word of Dutch/Flemish, even though it is the BIGGEST (linguistic) community in Belgium. (The other way around isn't that much better btw, but "we" do not wish to know, "we" being the Flemish)

So why do people not want the country legally divided then?

Oh, i see. That explains my above question.

The "Vlaams Blok" and its people are btw convicted for xenophobia etc. The party was placed outlawed, but by changing names its people could still remain in parliament.

Now, June 10 2007 there were elections. (Attention! There are 2 different opinions here, and both are condammed to cooperate)
Semi Flemish nationanlists won in Flanders as the "normal" parties won in Wallonia. It gave inspration to "separate" the electorial and juridicial circonscription Brussels - Halle - Vilvoorde. And that was oil on the fire.

To continue.

It took the 170- days to form a government First by Guy Verhofstadt (the former Prime Minister here) who wanted to stay until March 24! (Good Friday) After that Yves Leterme (who gained 800,000 FLEMISH votes) had to do it.
A small state reform has passed "Chambre" but is yet to pass the Senat here.
And a BIG reform is to be made before/on July 15!

So far a (very) short resume of Belgian post electoral history.
Not to forget that I am DUTCH (and therefore Dutch speaking) but my wife is French speaking, and we live in Flanders (Dutch speaking)
And.... voting is obligated by law. (for Belgians of course)

Small but major detail. 100,000 people speak German. Depend mostly on Germany as well, but do not live there, nor do they want to be German. The economy on these "Ostkantons" is however booming. And they are proud to be German speaking! (and almost but not all perfectly bilingual!)

So the Germans are in the Ostkantons. Where do their political allegiances generally lie?

Yes much appreciated! I'm going to look through it a couple times.

One thing before I forget. In the early days when Wallonian economy was booming, the Flemish really had to fight for their (Flemish/Dutch) language. Every "big" man and the aristocracy spoke French, wherever they lived. This is one of the reasons the Flemish tend to be rather extremistic when it comes to their language. (and I have to give them right in ONLY this aspect, though nowadays the Flemish exaggerate a lot)

Edit: Socialists, like the rest of Wallonia, but also more into liberal direction, as it is more "depending" on Germany/Luxemburg and the more "central" party cdH. (SP = Sozialistischer Partei, MR = Mouvement Réformateur, cdH = centre des Humanistes)
There are also typical "German" parties of course.
