Castles and stuff are mostly in the aread Thüringen (medieval). But it's a poor area and could be some affected by nazi people. Something I would highly recommend though is Trier, which also has nice old buildings, but roman. I fell in love with that town... Wanted to go study there myself.

Just looked at some pictures of it, beautiful place. What do you think about the far north, like Lübeck? It's right next to Scandinavia...

I know Lübeck.. don't think it's that nice, but I can't really remember though. Have been there last as a child. But it's near Mecklenburg, isn't it? Maybe it's a personal oppinion, but I don't like Mecklenburg (mostly because of the people).

Ever been to NRW? When i went to St. Goar, that was such a beautiful place, i was awestruck.

I can only tell you very approximately about it, because I never informed about the topic. So I can only tell about personal experience which of course is most likely only the impression of one town/place than really the whole country.

Impressions:
Mecklenburg: In youth extreme groups and intolerance amongst them. Punk, nazi and hip hop in fight mostly.

Thüringen: Really fucking poor. Shabby houses and stuff. Dunno about the people, but I know that in Sachsen (which is next) people say would be many Nazis.

NRW: Not sympathatic to me. Many turkish people (yes, I don't like turks). But I think that's mostly a matter of the town that I've been to. In other parts it might be very different. Heard lots of good stuff about NRW, didn't see any though yet (though I'm in NRW a lot).

btw. MM, the "gonna get me" thing is probably also a phenomenon of the forum. I get confronted with lots of slang and different dialects in here, that I absorb to my english.

Shit, if it worsens it, but on the other hand that is also a part of knowing english "perfectly".
