Yep, exactly. My paternal family originate from a village about an hour away from Venice. Even though my father's first language was Italian, he doesn't know how to speak "proper" Italian; pretty much only dialect. He also for some reason finds it hard to translate between that and English so he didn't teach us very much.

This was my Grandmother.. My mom on the other hand was a purist, she refused to teach us 'paysan' (slang) and instead made sure we learned proper "Roman".
