Would a replacement work though? It's not that the keyboard itself has anything wrong with it physically - they still press down like normal. Just the computer doesn't register that they were pressed.

So anyway, if anyone doesn't want to bother reading all that... :p

Short version of all of the above: Fix crappy laptop that will almost inevitably need repair later and probably at a bad time that'll cause problems with school, or get a new one?

Up to you. If an external keyboard works then the issue is with the existing keyboard and not the software. Depends how much cash you have.

Not enough now, but a couple paychecks and I will. I'm not too worried about the money - especially compared to time/school - but I am obviously keeping it on the only-as-much-power-as-I-need budget.

Alright, so I've been entertaining the idea of completely replacing my laptop rather than having it repaired.

Long story short: I have to use an external keyboard with this laptop because half the keys don't work. Only solution is to send it in and have it repaired under warranty. Which they say takes up to two weeks, but given the company's reputation, it'll be longer. It's an Acer. Which also has a horrible reputation as a laptop manufacturer in general. I haven't had this thing for a year and already it's acting up, so it seems mine is unlike others. Also common with Acer products is not only having to have it repaired once, but multiple times. So I fear that that this isn't going to be the only issue I have with it.

(Actually, it already isn't the only issue - I can't install Windows updates either, and trust me, I've tried EVERYTHING)

Also a factor is the fact that I use this laptop largely for school (the entertainment/fun/etc has for the most part been taken over by my smartphone) so if I were to send it in, it would be after finals, and then I would just have to hope and pray that they get it sent back before my next semester starts. And then, what if it screws up again, halfway through the semester, in a way that can't be temporarily "fixed" by plugging in a keyboard? I'd be completely screwed.

And also, I definitely can't go without getting at least this one fixed - I need the keyboard specifically for note-taking in class, not just for homework. So either I have to lug around this bulky keyboard or use the on-screen keyboard to school. I'd probably be better off using my smartphone.

Note: no I didn't buy this laptop, it was a gift from my dad last Christmas. The specs are good for $500 and it's held up well for my purposes. Besides that it's an Acer. If I'd chosen a laptop, I'd never in a million years go with an Acer.

It's also not perfect for school - it's an average sized 15.6 laptop. Meaning it's not easy to carry it around. As is, I don't have to carry any textbooks, and my bag is still on the heavy side. Next semester I probably will have to carry around textbooks. Weight matters, and I wish this one wasn't so heavy and bulky.

Maybe they don't like Amerkcans!

But seriously. Naïk works with Acer for quite some time, and she's completely satisfied, and never had a problem whatsoever!

Maybe it's just a "Monday morning" laptop.

Laptops built for US markets are not the same as laptops built for international. They use all the cheapest parts for us over here because there is less regulations.

C'est vrai?

Somehow I'm not surprised. The more regulations, the more difficult to sell your (crappy) things to someone.
We like QUALITY, and even that's not what it used to be anymore. Nonetheless we still do prefer GOOD stuff. And if you won't make it yourself, well, someone is going to say you have to.

But on that point? No. Didn't know.
My sauce is awesome :)

Bon appetit!

Can I have some?
