Alright, so I've been entertaining the idea of completely replacing my laptop rather than having it repaired.

Long story short: I have to use an external keyboard with this laptop because half the keys don't work. Only solution is to send it in and have it repaired under warranty. Which they say takes up to two weeks, but given the company's reputation, it'll be longer. It's an Acer. Which also has a horrible reputation as a laptop manufacturer in general. I haven't had this thing for a year and already it's acting up, so it seems mine is unlike others. Also common with Acer products is not only having to have it repaired once, but multiple times. So I fear that that this isn't going to be the only issue I have with it.

(Actually, it already isn't the only issue - I can't install Windows updates either, and trust me, I've tried EVERYTHING)

Also a factor is the fact that I use this laptop largely for school (the entertainment/fun/etc has for the most part been taken over by my smartphone) so if I were to send it in, it would be after finals, and then I would just have to hope and pray that they get it sent back before my next semester starts. And then, what if it screws up again, halfway through the semester, in a way that can't be temporarily "fixed" by plugging in a keyboard? I'd be completely screwed.

And also, I definitely can't go without getting at least this one fixed - I need the keyboard specifically for note-taking in class, not just for homework. So either I have to lug around this bulky keyboard or use the on-screen keyboard to school. I'd probably be better off using my smartphone.

Note: no I didn't buy this laptop, it was a gift from my dad last Christmas. The specs are good for $500 and it's held up well for my purposes. Besides that it's an Acer. If I'd chosen a laptop, I'd never in a million years go with an Acer.

It's also not perfect for school - it's an average sized 15.6 laptop. Meaning it's not easy to carry it around. As is, I don't have to carry any textbooks, and my bag is still on the heavy side. Next semester I probably will have to carry around textbooks. Weight matters, and I wish this one wasn't so heavy and bulky.

Can you get them to send you a replacement laptop keyboard and replace it yourself? It's not a difficult repair if you know anything about computers.

So anyway, the past few days I've been looking into which laptop I'd want if I decided to get a new one. And I've chosen one. It's at least as powerful as this one - should be slightly faster though - and far more portable. I've looked up reviews to confirm that it's a good one. (this one, for those who are curious)

I don't know, but I should ask. I'm good with mainly the software side of computers - not so much the hardware. My dad might be able to do that better than me though.
