I actually think it's always this way that with the "ei" you make a noun out of an adjective or verb and with the "er" you make a person out of a thing. Not sure though

normally if you make an "ei" noun out of it the noun is meant snidely though. Nomally the correct noun to "rennen" would be (das) "Rennen" e.g.
