in germany we vote directly for the party respectively the composition of the "Bundestag". And the party with the most members in there sets a "Bundeskanzler" which is probably most comparable to your president...

do you actually know the exact voting system of germany?

what you wrote above is pretty much all that i know. but i will learn, that is for sure.

my screen is standing on a box of beer now :p

wish mine was...

well, our government is the "Bundestag", they handle everything. The Bundestag is a collective of all the different parties in germany.

At the elections we have two votes, the first is for one member of a party. The member that got the most votes withing one "Bundesland" is voted to the "Bundestag" directly. He's got a save seat. So that's 16 seats of the Bundestag then (out of 260 seats or something like that).

The second vote is way more important. That one is for the whole country. You give a direct vote for one party. In the end they calculate how many percent of all votes each party got and they get the same amout of percent of seats in the Bundestag. A party needs to have gotten at least 5% of all votes to be allowed to the Bundestag.

e.g. party x gets 10 percent of all the votes in germany. They get (out of 260 seats) 26 seats in the Bundestag.
