I live in a zone in which "Hochdeutsch" is supposed to be spoken, but I can hardly understand it. I don't want to imagine how it would have been in Bayern or Austria

btw, I've never heard anything about Berlin-dialect. Does it have any peculiarity?

I read northern dialect in Germany are Low German, means, no second soundshift. But if you know how Highn German developed, you get an idea about the Low German dialects.
