IRON MAIDEN: New Single Posted Online - July 22, 2003

IRON MAIDEN have posted their forthcoming single, "Wildest Dreams", in Windows Media format at this location (http://www.ironmaiden.com/media/audio/wildestdreams.wmv. "Wildest Dreams" will receive its first U.K. radio play on the BBC Radio One "Rock Show" on Tuesday night (July 22). The song comes off the band's upcoming CD, "Dance Of Death", due on September 9 through Columbia Records.

IRON MAIDEN kicked off their North American tour with DIO and MOTÖRHEAD Monday night (July 21) in Worcester, Mass. Vocalist Bruce Dickinson recently told Asbury Park Press that despite his onstage shrieks, vocal strain has yet to be a concern.

"I've been kind of lucky, I guess, in that I've never had any serious problems so far with my voice," he said.

"I've found what really, really helps," Dickinson continued, "is singing with heavy-duty earplugs in. I've been wearing them, I guess, for nearly 15 years now. Not 'in-ear' monitors, I hasten to add. You see, they're actually 25- or 30-decibel plugs in my ears.

"Therefore, I hear my own voice in my head. And while you lose a certain amount of top end, you adjust for it. Psychologically, you make mental adjustments for that kind of stuff. I've found it really helps my ability to not strain and yell, especially in Maiden, which is basically a real high sound-pressure environment."

GREAT WHITE On First Tour Since Rhode Island Fire - July 22, 2003

Kirk Montgomery and Demetria Gallegos of DenverPost.com are reporting that "the rock band associated with one of the worst nightclub disasters in history kicks off its first concert tour since the tragedy tonight and Wednesday in Colorado. GREAT WHITE plays tonight (July 22) at the Logan County Fairgrounds in Sterling and Wednesday (July 23) at The Gardens nightclub in Colorado Springs.

"The tour will raise funds for survivors and families of victims of a fire that broke out at a Feb. 20 GREAT WHITE concert at a Rhode Island nightclub, leading to 100 deaths and more than 200 injuries.

"Representatives of Station Family Fund, formed to help survivors and victims' families, praised lead singer Jack Russell and the group's efforts.

"Russell 'is a great man for stepping up to the plate like he is, in such adverse conditions,' said Jody King, whose brother died in the fire, leaving behind a wife and three young sons. 'A lot of people would really hate the band and Jack, or the club owners. Of all the people to hate Jack, it would be me. But I really don't hate anybody.'

"But not everyone with ties to the tragedy shares those feelings.

" 'I don't know why they are not in jail,' Carol Sweet, a mother who lost her 28-year-old son in the fire, told The Boston Globe in May. 'I can't understand why they are still playing. I wouldn't even want any money that they made performing. ... I call it blood money. Our children died because of them.' " Read more.

MAYHEM To Record New Album In The Mountains Of Norway - July 21, 2003

Norwegian black metallers MAYHEM have abandoned their plans to record their new album, "Chimera", at Puk Studios in Copenhagen, Denmark. "Instead they will be bringing a mobile studio into the mountains of Norway for about five weeks or so," reads a statement on the band's official web site. "The drum tracks will probably be laid down in a studio in Oslo and then those files will be brought with them to wherever they stay in the mountains. They will also be accompanied by their technician for this recording, Børge Finstad. The band feel that their surroundings in this process will help give the album a great atmosphere."

The follow-up to 2000's "Grand Declaration Of War" will include the following working songtitles, among others:

01. Rape Humanity With Pride
02. Chimera
03. Dark Night Of The Soul
04. Deathwhore

An early 2004 release through Season Of Mist Records is expected.

CRADLE OF FILTH Bassist: We Are Too Extreme For EPIC RECORDS - July 20, 2003

It's hard to think of any logical reason to explain why Epic Records thought the black-metal scene was such an untapped gold mine of commercial potential that it gave CRADLE OF FILTH the opportunity to "waste as much money as possible, lots of makeup, lots of beer, 77-minute-long albums," bassist David Pybus tells Michael Tedder of the Kansas City Pitch. "The budget is huge — we could afford a 44-piece orchestra and a 32-piece choir. It's so extreme." After only a brief Billboard 200 chart showing of the band's latest CD, "Damnation & A Day", and the banned the video for "Babalon AD (So Glad for the Madness)", the investment started to look a little shaky. "I think [Epic] knows now," Pybus admits. "It's too extreme. We got a good chart position because of hard-core fans. We bent over backwards for MTV to show our last video, and they didn't play it. We won't be bending over backwards again." Read more.

TIM 'RIPPER' OWENS Says He Never Felt Like A Full-Fledged Member Of JUDAS PRIEST - July 20, 2003

John Petkovic of the Cleveland Plain Dealer spoke to ousted JUDAS PRIEST frontman Tim "Ripper" Owens about the group's decision to reunite with vocalist Rob Halford for an album and a world tour next year.

"There had been talk of Halford rejoining for a while," Owens said. "There had been so many big-money offers for them to reunite."

"I knew [the reunion with Halford] was going to happen," he continued. "I knew this wouldn't last. Rob is the original singer, and so he should also be the one there at the end."

PRIEST released two discs with Owens, "Jugulator" (1997) and "Demolition" (2001). Both received mediocre reviews and disappointing sales — 109,000 and 50,000, respectively, according to Nielsen SoundScan.

"When I joined, they had been broken up for about five years," he says. "The band had lost a lot of momentum, and it was hard to make up for lost time."

"Some people were disappointed, but they can't blame me," said Owens. "My vocals are right on. I just sang the songs they gave me."

According to Owens, he never felt like a full-fledged member.

"I had no control over decisions," he said. "At the same time, I couldn't pursue other projects because I was the lead singer in JUDAS PRIEST. It was frustrating, especially when we stopped touring this year."

When speculation started that Halford would rejoin, Owens even contemplated quitting.

"But I couldn't, " he said. "I figured something would happen. This was the best solution, for them and me."

Owens says he's already received offers from five bands, and he's currently pursuing a solo career and a collaboration with a musician he would not disclose. In addition, he is continuing to work with the local cover band THE SICKNESS.

"We're playing Erie, Pa., on Saturday [July 26]," says Owens. "I'll join them onstage to do some GODSMACK covers."

"This time it's for beer, fun and pocket change," the singer said. "Next time, I'm going to do my own stuff."
