Well, while the server was down I translated some of the reproaches, that led the RockHard mag to end the collaboration with W:O:A (since 1995). Or have you read them already? They said, many promises made by the Wacken organizers weren´t kept and now, to prevent the fest from getting too commercial and lose its spirit, RH wants to warn the organizers by stopping the support. These are some of the bad points *according to RH*:
- there was NO limitation of tickets
- sanitarian situation has got even worse instead of better
- prices weren´t hold steady as promised
- no proper reaction to the bad weather
- stages lapped (when it came to the sound)
- especially smaller bands´ treatment backstage left a lot to be desired
- bad working conditions for the staff
Well, still they say, they love Wacken much and just want to help...

In the Statement II in the news section the organizers react to this and say that most of RockHard´s points are not true that way but that they do accept their decision to end the collaboration (and they thank for the good last years). There´s gonna be a meeting and an interview with RH tomorrow.
Moreover the Wacken people say, they know of their responsabilities and will collect and try to learn from the criticisms. They stress that they also have to assume the full risk and that some wrong decisions might have happened in all the stress.
Hope, I could help.
@germans, correct me if I´m wrong, this is only a try of a summary...

I agree with all the points that you mention from Rockhard.

The situation was a lot worse this year than previous, without drawing attention to the weather. The toilets were disgusting this year, no where near as competent as last year, so I cant understand this.

And if the event was sold out as claimed on the home page why were tickets still freely availible at the desk. My ticket was nearly at number 24,000, yet Wacken had said in the past that they would not increase it from 22,000 because it would ruin the atmosphere.

The stage situation did not improve from last year, there was still the problem of hearing a mixture of two bands at the same time, and although the WET stage entrance was inside the festival, it was a struggle to enter and actually see the bands inside, the WET stage needed a bigger area and a more open tent to support it.

Rockhard have done the right thing, because they have to address these issues. You can be pissed off with Rockhard but they are doing the best thing. Rockhard did the same with Dynamo after the disasterous 1999 Dynamo festival and lit may have taken four years but next year will see the first three day Dynamo festival on a custom built site with all the necessay facilities there such as toilets etc on a permanent basis, and proper research for transport to the festival etc. It will be a short journey from Eindhoven and Wacken will have competition that they have not had since 1999.

I think it is necessary that wacken gets its act together, or we may see Wacken suffer the same traumatic times as Dynamo did.

Lee.

I have quite a different view from all of it.

The only time I've had to use the toilet (on saturday), they were cristal-clear (not really, but you know what i mean). I also didnt have any problem with the overcrowding, actually, to me, it didnt really look like Wacken was overcrowded. I also didnt have any problems with the sound stage though I didnt watch Green Carnation nor Haggard. About the weather, indeed, there was some mud on Friday, but it didnt really annoy me. I'd rather have mud on my feet than dust through the air.

As a newcomer to Wacken even I could tell there was no restriction on tickets, it seemed people just kept comingand coming.
I found the toilets to be ok until the Friday night and Saturday-shouldn't they step up the cleaning of them by then? they must make soooo much money from us surely they can do this?

Well, I wasn´t too unsatisfied with everything as well!
It was just a bit annoying for example not to be able to see some bands because of being small and having many tall people in front of me.
But I wouldn´t want to complain much anyway, it´s a festival, not a 4star holiday...

Part of the toilet problem is that some people have no sense of hygiene!

FOR FUCK'S SAKE PEOPLE - FLUSH!!!!!!!!

I only had to go for a dump once during the festival, but when I did go in there were only 2 cubicles unlocked - and both had a mega-turd sitting there waiting for me!! Jesus christ!!! Is it so hard to flush a toilet?? No wonder they turn into a mess!!!

my thoughts ....

My first Wacken was 2001, and I remember that as being better. Better band selection, fewer people. This time around it WAS too big. It was was very hard to move through the crowds. Last year I remembered being able to see half of one set, then work my way over to another stage to catch another band. That was cool. Now the crowds are just too big. Food prices are too high. It's impossible to find water inside the concert area, so you have to buy beer or cola in order not to dehyrdrate.

And do you know what really sucked? Bands like Cannibal Corpse had a camera man standing infront of them while they played, blocking our view. How's that for shitty? The camera man is more important than than the people who paid to see the band ....

I think Wacken is overall a really good festival, and I can understand why the organizers would want to let as many people as possible in to see it, but sooner or later they must realise that either they vastly increase the facilities, or they put a cap on the number of people attending. One or the other guys - you can't have both.
