why do they seem like a gimmick to you?
Theyve been around for a while under the name Battleheart

You DO know they were created for a laugh as a response to http://www.realultimatepower.net/index4.htm ? Their original webpage was actually a parody of http://www.realultimatepower.net/index4.htm with all the jokes changed to pirates beating ninjas.

"Gavin" even said once that "I'd hate to be made famous with Battleheart, lol".

I guess the record deal changed his mind.

Well they've done well for themselves from being a parody of a ninja page :p

Negura Bunget despite their silly sounding name however sound awesome. Be interesting to see if they can pull it off live..

Seen 'em live, they can. No idea if it would transfer to a festival stage.

Aside from what The Captain has said, they are a pirate metal band. That seems pretty fucking gimmicky to me.

Yeah Alestorm are a gimmick band, but they play awesome music and it's a massive step up from JFAG and the likes!
Gimmick bands aren't necessarily a bad thing, look at GWAR!
Besides, comedy and metal go hand in hand. Always have.
Even "serious" death metal bands have some form of laughable quality.
As does Black Metal (surely you've seen the "10 Ridiculous Black Metal Pictures" site?).
Power metal can be so cheesy that you have to laugh while appreciating the music.
..and let's not get started on Folk/Battle Metal!

You're going to hate me, but I don't like Gwar either. :p

I couldn't disagree with the other point more. Metal is not a joke for me, and I prefer the bands who are sincere about it, even if that means taking corpse-painted black metal bands at face value.

I know for some people, a lot of it is tongue in cheek. Which is why bands like JBO go down so well at Wacken, playing ironic pop covers. But I really hate that shit.
