Hi Pumpkinheads,

As this messageboard approaches it’s 3rd anniversary, we think it is time to take stock and see how far we have come, and what we have planned for the future.

The Official German Helloween Messageboard, Treasure Chest, was started in April 2003 by David. For many months there was a small membership. After the board achieved official status there was a rapid uptake in registrations, particularly from October 2003, and onwards. During that time a close, and friendly community of Helloween fans was established and began to grow over the months and years. Whilst the subject of Helloween was the common thread that brought us together, it was often in the offtopic section that friendships were forged, and the variety in cultures and personalities were displayed. The number of forums grew along with the membership; people came and went, some came back again, and many never left.
These are the foundations of what this messageboard was built upon, and even today it is the cornerstone of what we want to achieve on this messageboard.

Over recent months there have been times where this messageboard seemed to have lost sight of it’s initial qualities. The decade old arguments began to take a grip in the Helloween section once again, and it sometimes resembled more a battleground than a platform for polite discussion. The thing that 99.9% of all members have in common with each other is at least an appreciation Helloween and their music. It is almost paradoxical that the common factor that brought us together is also the one that causes some of us to fight, or bitterly defend the slightest perceived offence regarding this band and their music. Helloween are a heavy metal band that make music for our entertainment, yet some of us feel compelled to attack, insult, or degrade, band members past and present, albums, and songs. We are not compelled to like every band member, or every song, and we are free to say so. All these guys have ever done to us is try to entertain us, yet some members of this board have claimed to hate certain members, insult their abilities with personal and degrading remarks, and even extended the bitterness to remarking on band members personal lives.
The question we have to ask is; what does all this achieve?

The fact that some of these arguments have been going on for 17 years is a testament to the futility of the arguments about past band members, current band members, the Keeper’s albums compared to the EMI era, and beyond. The only thing that is achieved is that people, who might otherwise be friends, can become enemies. The other effect, of course is that the environment this bitterness creates is not one where band members will feel comfortable posting in. Some of us complain that band members rarely come out and comment on controversial issues, or answer questions. It is not surprising that they do not feel comfortable posting here when a few people show such hostility to them in their own home.

We believe that this messageboard is something the band and the fans can equally be proud of, but it could be much better, and we are the only ones preventing it from being better.
The team of admins and moderators are dedicated to making this board a better experience, and a pleasant place to post. Many of you will have noticed in recent weeks the addition of the Arcade section, the dedicated movie forum, and the re-launch of the poll section. We have increased the number of moderators to help administrate the board, and they have been working very hard in the background doing the mundane jobs, but also providing new ideas and thoughts to improve this messageboard. In relation to this we have issued a new set of board rules, which makes clear what is allowed, and what is not. Please take time to read them here.... http://www.helloweenboard.com/showthread.php?t=6648

In the coming months we will be implementing some exciting additions to this board; they will be announced in due course.

Helloween Messageboard Rules
(last updated: 03-06-2005)

1. Report Function
First of all, please report rule violations! We do not monitor every post, so we ask you to let us know of problems. Click the report button to send a short message to the team.

2. Domestic Authority
This is not your house, it is ours. Posting here is a privilege, not a right. The privilege to post can be suspended or revoked at any time and completely at our discretion.

3. Netiquette / Mutual Respect
This board is made for entertainment, enjoyment and respectful discussions, not for fights, accusations and flame-wars. We want everybody to be able to enjoy himself in here, so treat everybody else like you would like to be treated.

a) Be polite and respectful to all members, including moderators, at all times.

b) No insults, name calling or belittling of other members. No abusive language against people - be it other boardmembers or musicians.

c) No degrading of other users' opinions, religions, world-views and tastes. You like what you like, other people like different things. Their taste is not less worthy, less true or less correct than yours. So keep in mind that your favourite bands are not better than other people's favourite bands... you just like them more. No reason to fight about that.

d) About our favourite flames-topic: Old line-ups vs. new line-ups etc...: We respect everyone's opinion to prefer the one or the other line-up, the one or the other singer and everyone is free to say so. But take care that in doing so, you don't degrade the other person's feelings about their favourite singers and line-ups, and that you pay due respect to every bandmember past or present. The intentional starting of flames concerning line-up-changes will not be tolerated.

e) If you don't have a clue about something, don't put up claims about it. If you don't like a band, don't go to the thread about them, just to tell the other people there how much this band sucks. Sometimes it's better to keep your mouth shut. You can always say that you don't like a band, a song or an album, and you can also try to respectfully explain, why you don't like it. But don't try to spoil threads, just by putting things down or showing your disinterest.

4. Relax!!!
If someone posts something that makes you angry, the best thing to do is step away from the computer for a bit. We often misinterpret other people's intentions and make mistakes in the heat of anger. Without the body language available to in-person communications, sarcasm or jokes can be taken the wrong way -- we encourage you to label attempts at humor with pumpkins so folks will know.

5. Adult Content
No obscenities or pornography or adult humor. Images of a sexual nature are not allowed, and will be immediately removed if posted. Please remember that there are a number of underage members on this board, and that the main subject of this forum is music. Discussions of an overt sexual nature are not fitting for this board. There are plenty of places on the internet that welcome adult jokes, this isn't one of them.

6. Spam
No spamming or advertising. Linking to commercial content related to the current thread is acceptable, but everything else is probably spam.

7. Talking On Topic
Keep topics on-topic. Start new topics for new discussions. If you don't like what is being discussed, the best thing is not to say anything at all. "Hijacking" threads to talk about something different is neither polite nor respectful.

8. Authority Of Mods
Mods decisions about warnings and penalties are final and not to be disputed in the forum. Inquiries can be politely made via private message.

No discussing penalties or punished members in the forums. Our team goes to great lengths to keep private our penalties in order to avoid member embarrassment -- an excessive sanction. If you agree or disagree with our actions in a certain situation, we require that you also deal with the matter privately (use the personal message system provided by the board or email). Please remember that you do not possess all of the circumstances and evidence with regard to any situation, and we might not be able to share all of the evidence with you for privacy reasons, but we are always fair and will listen to appeals. We make difficult decisions and rein in rule violators in order to protect the public mission of our forums.

9. Fake Accounts
Do not create fake accounts to skirt these rules. The use/theft of other people's identities when posting is strictly forbidden and has special penalties. You are permitted to have ONE user account. Those who create multiple accounts will have BOTH accounts removed.

10. Copyright Issues
This board is bound to German laws and jurisdiction concerning copyright infringements. Hence you have to obey the following rules:

a) You are strictly forbidden post links to any filesharing softwares or platforms.

b) You must not directly link to any audio-files hosted by other websites. You can post a link to the site holding legal files, but not to the file itself. We will be charged fees for such links from the copyright owners' association, which we can not afford paying.

c) It is not allowed to post links and share files containing illegal recordings or illegal copies of recordings including concert-material on either video or audio. To put it short: No bootleg trading via this homepage unless it is approved by the band and its management.

d) The posting and sharing of photos taken with cameras that you have legally brought to a concert is allowed and appreciated.

11. Other Illegal Acts
The posting of links including material violating the German poenal code, especially nazist, racist and other extremist propaganda is strictly forbidden and will result in immediate banning without warning.

12. Penalties
If you break any of the above rules, penalties will be applied on your account. The minimum is a temporary "timeout" from using our forums; the maximum is a permanent and total removal of your account.

a) Timeouts
We use a simple "timeout" mechanism which gives members a break from the site, time for everyone to cool down, and a method for members to regain their posting privileges after a period. During your timeout, your writing-rights are revoked but you will still have access to all parts of the messageboard, including your profile, your personal messages, etc. The duration of the timeout will depend on the situation. The exact length of time is determined solely by moderators, but the minimum is 24 hours. After your timeout has been instituted, you will receive email explaining the reason for your timeout and its duration.

b) Permanent Suspension
Serious offenses and either persistent or repeated minor offenses may result in a total ban from using the site. This includes removing your signature, your avatar, etc.

c) Warnings
In an effort to stop a rule violation before it occurs, moderators may send informal advisories to encourage rule compliance at any time. Someone breaking the rules may or may not have received a preceding warning before a timeout or a permanent suspension. Note that you might want to activate your personal message system. Otherwise moderators will have to address any issue in public.
