How does globalisation affect our lives?
The Global Village

'Have you seen my new Dr. Martens?', my best friend Charlie asked me yesterday. But without waiting for an answer, she lifted her jeans and showed me her new boots. She actually knew the answer, she just bought them.
'Where did you get them?', I said. Her new boots looked very nice and I was in dire need of new shoes.
'Oh, I've got them from this little shoe store in Carnaby Street, they were very cheap', she mumbled, while taking a mouthful of a 'Dunkin Donut'.
'Can you give me the address, please?', I asked her. She gave me the address and we went on chatting about a new show on MTV, school and our boyfriends.
I really like my best friend Charlie. We know each other since 5 years and we can talk about everything. We listen to the same music and we are in complete agreement. We meet almost every day.
I looked at my watch, it was half past eleven and my eyelids felt very heavy.
'Look, it's late and I have to go now. I have to go to school tomorrow. See you!', I said and beckoned to her.
'Well, OK, see you tomorrow!', she said.
I turned off my webcam, took off my headset and shut down the computer. I thought about Charlie and sighed. It was very cold and dark outside. It was snowing and I could hear the scroop of the roof, because it was really stormy.
It was afternoon now in Los Angeles and maybe about 25 degree Centigrade. Charlie would go outside and swim or she would just go to the beach to read.
Eventually we will meet and chat, go to a pub or a concert. Eventually we will go to the beach, swim and have fun. In real life.

This is an example for the life of an average teenage girl in Germany. Today, every teenager has the possibility to own a computer with an internet connection. In my opinion, the internet is an important key to the gate of the Global Village. We are able to communicate with people from all over the world. With a webcam and a headset, we're even able to see them and talk to them, as if we were in the same room. Moreover, we are able to buy clothes or shoes via the internet, even if the store is in London or in the USA. It is even possible to order food via the internet.

The girls in the example both wear the same shoes, eat the same food and watch the same shows on tv, though one of them lives in Germany and the other in the USA. In former times, the food or the clothes distinguished from region to region. The people used the local resources to produce clothes and the dishes conformed to the animals and vegetables of their region. So, every village was a bit different concerning traditions, food and clothes. For instance, the people in Northern Germany ate more fish than the people in Bavaria.

From my point of view, one of the most important inventions for the progress of globalisation is the internet. I think the internet embodies the Global Village, because everyone is able to do almost all the things on the internet that you can do in a village. You can meet your friends or buy something without covering far distances. The internet allows everyone to enter the whole world.
