To cut a long story short, I did not end up going to the training in town. Instead, I continued with my work as normal, but not without hiccoughs
Ok to make a short story more detailed
I got as far as 4km or less from work to head to the city. I got as far as the slip road to the motorway and the traffic was massive. I thought just maybe that it was just peak-hour stuff that I never see. Soon I noticed the only reason we were moving was because people up ahead were getting out of that lane and trying another direction.
Along comes a tow truck, then a motorway patrol car, then the witches hats come out and no-one is allowed to go down that way. So we all had to try another way. I thought perhaps I could drive up a bit further and try to get onto the motor way up there, but by the time I found another entrance (as you can imagine the traffic was also really bad up to this point but at least it was moving), THAT entrance had been blocked off by a patrol car. With just 5 minutes until my training was about to start, I thought "NOPE

" and went back to my office.
My supervisor heard on the radio that there had been an accident involving a bus and three cars. Apparently 43 people were reviewed by paramedics
