Hehe I wondered about that. My Eurail/DB rail pass doesn't cover the non-major trains. Guess I rode that illegally then.

Sorry to disappoint you, but the DB tickets are mostly valid on all trains, even the non-major ones. They have an agreement about that.

But the AKN is an exception whereas DB tickets are valid.
They do not accept DB rate, but only HVV rate. It is impossible to use Bahncard or any DB ticket/card. (unless it's part of a supplement I suppose)

Oooooh so they're in the HVV! That is some other thing. I didn't think it would only be a regional train. There are some other smaller train companies on heavy rail lines which accept DB tickets.

But regional transport is another issue.

Local railways and DB Regio work together. So you can take e.g. the Prignitzer Eisenbahnen (Enschede-Gronau-Dortmund) or the Westfalenbahn, the Nord-Ostsee-Bahn, or the "Euregiobahn" with DB rate. But local rates are also valid. Others like AKN don't.

It's actually more like a subway than a real train. Only, it runs on diesel. And its frequency isn't that of a normal subway. (U-Bahn)
