Of for sure, if you can do it with the train in about the same time I would do it also! I love European trains. I wouldn't recomend the train here though! My boyfriend just took a train to Montreal (it's a 3 hour car drive). There are only 2 trains going on Saturday, one at 4pm and one at 4:30 pm so if you want to leave any other time you have to wait. He sat int he train station for 7 hours because he wanted to get an earlier train only to find that it was not possible. There are no lockers and his bags weighed too much to be carrying around so he couldn't even go anywhere. The only 'restaraunt' was McDonalds (barf). Trains here suck.

I've heard that before.

But that's due to lack of interest of (Federal/Provincial/State) governments.
But here we find freedom of movement/travel part of our constitutions. Reasons why (federal) governments here invest in public transportation!

And one country more than an other, but that also depends on the country itself, its size, and its possibilities.

You are right, no one cares enough here. But if some government WERE to even try people would jump on them for spending money 'needlessly' because they just don't understand the importance of public transportation. Investing heavily in those forms of transportation..trains, bus, trams etc.. will reduce the dependence on oil/gas but that's not how it works here..Everyone likes the cheap gas. The only way it will ever happen is if they raise the price of gas to be reflective of the REAL cost - like it is in Europe. When its 'expensive' to drive people will start demanding alternatives. We pay here $1.16 / litre ($4.38 /gal) What do you pay?

If I can get to London from Brussels in 2hrs, that's OK for me. Why would I want to be quicker?

And if I need 6hrs to get to and from an airport, and the time to fly, and the same trip takes 8hrs by train, I know the difference.

I wasn't talking about Belgium to London.

I wouldn't want to fly within Europe anyway - trains are much more fun. I might fly Norway to Spain though. :D

But US to Europe? Definitely plane. Boats would take ages. And within the US, unless I'm going just to a neighboring state, flying's better too because I hate driving.

We pay for Petrol ~€1.58/liter, Diesel around ~€1.49 and gas (real liquid gas) is about ~€0.86/liter. (Belgium)
Some countries are cheaper (Luxemburg), others are more expensive (Netherlands)

But.. you pay heavy tax on gas cars, plus you cannot park them everywhere, and you still need petrol to get it GOING. Once it's running you can change to gas.

And you're right. The mentality in (northern) America is completely different than in Europe. You can see it on gas prices already! Thus, we want a decent alternative.

Europe US v.v. is defenitely flying. Got no choice there as I'm afraid on open water, plus it takes ages to get there. But why fly within Europe if it's as long "over the ground"?

I can understand if you're flying from Madrid to Helsinki. It would take 2 days to get there by "land". But on relatively short distances, it's rather disadvantage to fly as check in procedures (security etc) take so much time, which you don't by "land".

Like I said, no point.

American gas prices are generally even lower than Canada. In the UK they are paying MUCH more. Thus investing into a reliable public transport system is more 'acceptable' to the public than it is here where we are spoiled by being able to drive everywhere cheaply.

I wish we had public transit. I hate driving. :o I intend on living in NYC later in large part due to that.

Why not here? (EU)

There are always people in need of anglophones! And not just from the UK.

Until I know German fluently (or close enough) that's probably not going to happen. And as much as I like it there, visiting someplace and living there are two different things entirely.

How long did your trip from Göteborg to Heide take you by train?
If I remember correctly, you were to arrive around 7pm in Heidestation!

Edit Piaf zegt: I checked it, it was more or less 12hrs by train.

Many would've flown the distance (to Hamburg)

Something like that. Rostock > Prague (actually longer) was longer though, I believe.

Still....

Though, I did Luxemburg->Arlon-Luxemburg-Thionville-Metz-Strassbourg-St. Louis-Colmar-Basel (Bad/SBB)-Zürich-Bern in one day.
Good thing one could at that time smoke in the trains. Now that's impossible
