I work in Ottawa,Ontario. In this area you must be bilingual to do any kind of service job, management job and about 90% of anything else. We are right on the border with Quebec and Ottawa is the capital of Canada so everyone here is all proud that the "country" is bilingual when really it's only this tiny part and the government has no interest to help anyone that already lives here to take language classAnd yes, I know, I have no choice. I keep taking classes but have yet to find a good school where I can learn. It's one of my biggest annoyances of the government in that they SAY we are bilingual but yet will not help you get there unless you are a new immigrant.
The King (of Belgium) is always saying the very same thing. And... the (federal) government is not doing anything to become bilingual. (unless you have a French and Dutch speaking parent of course etc.)
So... I know exactly what you're talking about.
