Depends really, differs a bit per game if it's nice to have or actually a drawback, I would advise trying it either at a shop having em on display or ask a friend who owns one.

Difficult - I might get the task to by one for my nephew for his birthday. Decision for the device is already made but which game for the beginning...?

Depends what he likes really. Differs so much each person. To really use the 3DS you'll need a game specially made for that and not a DS game like pokemon (although those are insanely good games).

If he likes soccer then PES 2011 is really good, uses the 3D as on of the best of all the available games and boosts nearly the same in-game gameplay as console versions.
