I used to ride my bike to TAFE college (I'd have to take the bus that leaves an hour before class and it was only a few kilometres from home). My knees are kind of fucked now, and work is 30km away, so I have to put up with dickheads who are eligible for a refund on their license.

I did bike every day from Best to Eindhoven (both in the Netherlands). That's about 10k's a trip. But now, from Charleroi to Namur, that's about 42k's and a bit too far for my likings.
Besides, the landscape in NL is pretty flat, which makes it easier to bike, but here in Belgium (Wallonia), there are more hills, and I'm still riding a "Dutch Granny bike".

No probs with my knees though. Or I do not know it yet!

And public transport in Belgium... is better organised than in Australia, without a doubt, but best? Nah!

Reminds me how the English always complain about trains being late and Japan's public transport being awesome. I always had it in my head that they would wait half an hour for a late train or something. Then when I went to ride the tubes in London I always wondered why I was always one or two minutes "early" for the train :p I don't think our population is dense enough for such transport but it would be nice.

But there are other ways than the tube/subway. A streetcar/road train, or buses. Nothing wrong, as long as they run on a regular basis.
It's Australia Day :D

do you have a day off tomorrow?

It's probably something like "Tag der deutsche Einheit".

I thought the buses in London were bloody fantastic. I especially liked the bit where I got off at the wrong stop a couple of times and waited a whole 10 minutes for another bus to come and this was in the outer suburbs after 8pm. Absolutely unheard of around here (inner Brisbane where all the hippies, homeless and students live, maybe). Otherwise you could be waiting up to an hour if you're lucky.

Sort of. It's the anniversary of the arrival of the first fleet of Brittish convicts in Australia. There are arguments about the date of the holiday and what it "means" to be Australian...every single year!

For me, it's just another day where I get money and I don't have to show up to work :D
