I remember being at a bar here some years ago, I was talking to two guys and by their accents I thought that they were Australian, they said they were from NZ and did not like being confused for Aussies!

Yep that is true.

It is like confusing a Canadian with and American they hate that.

Well I am sure that to a Kiwi or Aussie there is a huge difference, but to me the dumb American they sound very similar.

not dumb, just not exposed to it everyday!

I couldnt tell a southern drawl from an eastern US or whatever accent. We even have a little bit different accents in aus. People from QLD talk weird

Another funny thing is I was at the airport in Salt Lake City waiting for a plane. I started talking to this guy from the East Coast, and he says where are you from? I say Hawaii, and he says yeah that's it, I could not pinpoint your accent. I had a college room mate from Hawaii and you sound like him. I thought that I have No accent at all.

When I traveled to WOA in 2003, I wanted to bring a flag with me like many people do, showing where they're from. But then I thought that might be a bad idea since we had just gone to war in Iraq and America is not a very popular country abroad. So I brought a Hawaii flag instead.
