So, excuse my ignorance, but what is the big debate going on over there? Whether to have an independent Belgium, or for France to absorb it?
I never heard about that debate (except of you talking about it)...
As I'm not Belgian myself, I try to explain it.
Belgium has 2 large communities, Flanders & Wallonia (and a little 3rd which is linked to Wallonia, the East Cantons) and therefore 3 national languages of which Flemish (= a sort of Dutch) French (in Wallonia) and German (in the East Cantons)
So far, so good.
There is also Brussels, a BILINGUAL community in which we speak both French and Flemish. So far, still so good. But there is also the Brussels suburbs, and now the point is coming. These suburbs are bilingual in population, but is Flemish only by territorial means.
So far, so good but the point is coming now.
Belgium used to have electoral circonscribtions (ortographe) that worked just fine, until one day one decided that thiese circonscribtoins were too small. So, they changed it to provincial circonscribtions. And this was a problem!
As Brussels being a bilingual city, its surrounding suburbs being unilingual, they left the Brussels - Hal(le) - Vilvo(o)rde circonscribtion intact. By ruling of the Constitutional Court, this was considered discrimination. So, the Flemish being in majority in numbers unilaterally voted for the scission of this circonscribtoin, against the will of the Wallonian part of Belgium.
Furthermore, on June 11 there were federal elections for parliament. As from June 12 until today, Belgium is without government, and due to this (stupid) voting, it'll be even more difficult to form a government in equals. (this meaning: If we have 12 ministers, there are 6 of each (big) language role, so 6 Flemish, and 6 French speaking)
The Flemish being more and more radical in their demands of a state reform, more independence and I-don't-know-what-else, Belgium might (and I say MIGHT) cease to exist, being separated in both Flanders and Wallonia, with an enclave called Brussels (where the majority is French speaking btw)
Not to mention the East Cantons who MIGHT decide to unite with either Germany (both German speakers) or Luxemburg, or remain in Wallonia, and live as a bilingual country. But let's hope this is not the case so far.
Tot zover mijn uitleg. Ze is vermoeiend. Pffff
