But you get some (very small) revenue. I don't know how the system in the US works.

The other thing is that in North America most universities are quite a bit more expensive than in the Netherlands or other European nations. I've also heard that some students over there get help from the government, which we don't in North America.

So, if I'm correct, you/youre parents pay for it basicly.

In NL you get a very small income and a student loan.
(and if you have the chance, you can work to get an extra income)

Yep, it's the student who pays for it entirely. I'm not sure how easy it is in the States, but over here you can apply to get a student loan though they can be a little difficult to get sometimes and you often have to keep applying.

Out of curiosity, how long do you guys have over there until you have to start paying back student loans? Over here, once you've been out of university for six months you have to start paying it back.

The year AFTER graduation (or whatever you call it) for 30 years. If then not paid back, the Dutch government has to repay itself. (in MY situation!)

Do they deduct what they'd normally give you as a student loan over there if you're working? That can be a deterrent for some to work over a certain amount of hours.

They did in my time.

You had a "free" amount you could earn extra, after that they deducted it from the income, NOT from the loan of course!

Guess it won't be better now. (I'm talking 20 years ago)

Cool. I'm actually not too sure what happens if you fail to pay back your student loans over here. I know that you start having to repay them after 6 months and that you have 9.5 years to repay them, and that after a time they start to accumulate 1% interest. But that's about it. Never known anyone who hasn't paid them back. That would be awesome if it ended up that our provincial government would repay it themselves though

But this is 20 years ago! (and I still fall under THAT regime)
I don't know how it is now, as I left the country. (and I'm old)

Yeah, have had to deal with that as well for the last few years though luckily my university is fairly cheap compared to most. Finally managed to get a student loan for the first time this semester, that was a great help but then again I'll have to pay it all back soon so, meh.

In my last semester of undergrad now so I just want it all to go away now lol I think I'd rather have to deal with getting a decent job to help me save up for grad school than deal with school work at this point:p

yea I know what you mean :p

but I might have hit a bit of luck... just applied for the university my mom graduated from, in Louisiana... even cheaper than here, plus my mom knows the band people from there and says I can probably get a scholarship for that
