I got to know today where "moin, moin" comes from (the northern german version). Against many believes it has nothing to do with "morgen". It comes from the Platt dialect (probably original from dutch) "mooi" which means "good". That's btw. why you can say "moin, moin" as some greeting in every time of the day, because it has no meaning of any daytime, though it might sound like "morgen" (morning).
