Sounds like good ol' fashion political double talk to me. Whatever. I couldn't really care less. Let people do what they want as long as it doesn't affect me. The only thing that would've sucked would've been all the gay people moving to sunny California with hopes to get married. We have bad enough traffic as it is. It would've put more cars on the road. Traffic in Los Angeles is the worst next to New York.

opposing gay marriage due to personal beliefs NOT EQUAL TO opposing gay marriage on federal/constitional grounds

in other words, you might be against gay marriage personally, but realise it's wrong to impose your personal beliefs on others or make them law.
