yea, he killed a SNAKE and called it a basilisk... that's an insult...

well according to wikipedia sais the following:
the basilisk of Cyrene is a small snake, "being not more than twelve fingers in length",[2] that is so venomous that it leaves a wide trail of deadly venom in its wake, and its gaze is likewise lethal; its weakness is in the odour of the weasel, which, according to Pliny, was thrown into the basilisk's hole, recognisable because all the surrounding shrubs and grass had been scorched by its presence.

meaning that in parts of ancient Greece it was considered a snake.

In the mythology I know it's a kind of lizard from a snakes body but a rooster's head.

In the mythology I know it's a kind of lizard from a snakes body but a rosters head.

"Though the basilisk is always reptilian, its form differs according to the source. Descriptions of the basilisk fall into three main categories, but there is a great deal of variation within each. The basilisk may be described as a snake, a lizard, or a cockatrice, another legendary creature that is half serpent and half rooster. "

so I guess it can be anything reptilian.

it's actually funny how this things go, apparently in the first known sources they talk about just a small very poisoness snake, and later on it has 6 legs and wings and stuff :p :D

well, that thing in Harry Potter was not just a small snake either, so... :p

Nowadays there is a lizard that is named basilisk btw. It's a lizard afterall! :D
