Choosing accomodation and looking for to share a car WOA2014

Hello to everyone!!!

I'm preparing my first WOA experience. I will travel from Spain with a collegue and we want to stay on a Hotel to try to survive the 3 days.
The nearest places with available rooms and cheap are on Barmstedt and Bad Bramstedt. The second one is better quality and the distance seems similar, but not the time (according Google Maps info).

Barmstedt -> Google Maps says 45,5Km and 39 minutes
Bad Bramstedt -> Google Maps says 49,2Km and 54 minutes

We will rent a car to go and return daily to WOA. Our idea is go at 12h and return at 1h or similar, depending the groups. A Taxi could be extremly expensive.
Is it a good idea or will we have problems with the traffic jam?
Can anyone who knows the area give their point of view?

Another issue is that we are looking for more people to share the daily journeys in order to don't drive all of them.

As with the last person that enquired about hotels - why don't you just camp? Unless you have a really good reason, I would strongly advise against staying at a hotel for the duration of the festival. There should be accommodation available in Itzehoe though if I can't convince you otherwise.

Now that I think of it, I'm not so sure if there is cheap accommodation available in Itzehoe. I don't recall Barmstedt being that far away from Wacken though; maybe half that distance?

Last year I saw some kind of houseboat hotel near Wacken. It's expensive but very close to the festival. Look at the archives from this past WOA. Like Alix, I still recommend camping. Either your own tent or rent a tent like I'm doing.

I wrote to a lot of hotels nearer (in Itzehoe or oders) but all rooms are booked. And I know that camping could be better, but I have some shoulder problems that could be not compatible.

You wanted to rent a car? Rent a mobile home instead, get on Y and problem solved.
A decent bed (at least in the modern mobile homes) and your shoulder can deal with it, and you're still camping! (and even can reserve electricity if needed)

I thought on rent a caravana, Camper or similar, but are extremely expensive due to you must rent it for 15 days. Also WOA organization rent it but it's more than 1000eur, extrem for 2 persons.

I've never heard of that in my whole life! Depends maybe on the rental company.

My opinion as a local, don't go to Barmstedt, it's way too far away. Also it's south from Wacken, which means you'll probably have to deal with traffic jams all through the festival. If Itzehoe is fully booked, you should maybe look around for a hotel/hostel in Schenefeld, or even Hanerau or Hohenwestedt. Hell, even Heide and everything around it (which is where I come from) would be closer and a better traffic connection. If you're coming from the north, traffic jams shouldn't be much of a problem anymore, yet, finding parking will be a bitch. Usually, as soon as you're leaving the highway, there'll already be traffic organisers, blocking certain streets and telling you where to go.

My personal advice: Find a place north from Wacken. Get off the highway early, park your car between Besdorf and Gribbohm (which are the villages before Wacken) and walk the rest. It's not really that far. Your car will be save and you'll save yourself being sent around in circles.

OR

Just take a daily train to Itzehoe and then the shuttle. Should save you some trouble, too, and I doubt it'll be that expensive.

Yea, I was thinking about that, too, actually. The trains in our area go until midnight or 1am. After that you'll have to wait until 5am for the next one. You could try finding a place in reach for a cab around Itzehoe. Other than that, if you still wanna rent a car, my earlier information stays valid

That's a fair call. I'm not sure if it will make a difference for you, but I found the grounds at Wacken extremely comfortable to sleep on. In all the nights I've slept there, I never woke up with a sore back or had to crack my back into place, and only had to crack my neck when I didn't think to bring a pillow.

I mention this place on an earlier post. Not sure when they will start offering reservations for 2014 Wacken. It is expensive but closer than most of the hotels.
