It's (almost) either that, or get a law suit on your back. That's what the US is about nowadays. Claim damage, and demand a gazillion $$$ in return as "expenses" etc.Idiot customer spent half an hour of mostly waiting and a bit of arguing with my manager to return a $20 phone. For no reason at all. It was beyond our return policy and he even told me he'd just been procrastinating returning it. So basically he just thought he was above our return policy. Thought he was more important than the other zillions of people who try to return phones. I hate people like that.
I also hate that management caved and did the return.
One thing that never fails to frustrate me is people who get their way who don't deserve to, for any reason at all. I hate it. So much.

I've been living with an asthma patient for more than a decade and I still smoke. I just adapt. (e.g. outside now)
